Lahontan got here first. Highlands Management and DMB laid it out on the old Gooseneck Ranch in the mid-1990s as Martis Valley's original private country-club community, opened Tom Weiskopf's course in 1998, and introduced this market to the manned 24-hour gate that every luxury enclave up here now copies. The name reaches back to ancient Lake Lahontan, the Ice Age inland sea, itself named by surveyor Clarence King for a French baron who, as the Tahoe Daily Tribune enjoys pointing out, never actually set foot near the place. The homes are rustic-luxury customs on big forested lots, with a Weiskopf championship course and a par-3 short course, the Lodge, and Camp Lahontan for families. Martis Creek and Waddle Ranch open space sit just south, and Northstar is a short drive east. What buyers underestimate is the carrying cost: an equity golf membership and its dues ride on top of the HOA, guests and contractors deal with the gate, and it is propane heat at altitude. Some stretches are still infilling. This is old-guard Martis Valley, and it wears it well.
