Schaffer's Mill spent its first life as Timilick, a name nobody could quite explain, until a Dallas group bought the half-built community in 2011 and renamed it for George Schaffer, the man local histories call the Father of Truckee, who ran a Martis Valley sawmill in 1871 and reportedly told his loggers to leave the small trees standing. The golf course carries the Johnny Miller and John Harbottle name. The draw here is range. Alongside the custom homes there are cottages and attached residences, so the price of entry runs wider than at Martis Camp or Lahontan next door, and the club packages golf with a lake and beach amenity rather than pure fairway prestige. It is gated, forested, and close to both downtown Truckee and Northstar. The tradeoffs are real: the community changed hands and built out slower than its neighbors, club and HOA dues are part of the math, and it is propane at Truckee snow load. For buyers who want the gated Martis Valley address without the very top ticket, this is usually where the conversation lands.
