Old Greenwood is named for Caleb Greenwood, the aged mountain man who guided the first wagon party over the Sierra in 1844, and the ground has older stories still: a 2002 dig here uncovered an 1870s Chinese charcoal camp, roughly 150 ovens' worth, complete with rice bowls and coins. East West Partners opened the Jack Nicklaus course in 2004, and the community hosted the PGA Tour's Barracuda Championship in 2020, which is more tournament pedigree than most golf neighborhoods can claim. The mix is unusual: around a hundred homesites plus fractional cabins and townhomes, anchored by the Old Greenwood Pavilion and a Tahoe Mountain Club membership shared with Gray's Crossing. It sits minutes from downtown Truckee, which is the convenience and, given the community hugs Interstate 80, part of the compromise. Be clear-eyed on cost and product: Tahoe Mountain Club initiation and dues stack on the HOA, fractional ownership is not for everyone, and the freeway hum trades seclusion for access. For a Nicklaus course this close to town, plenty of buyers make that trade happily.
