The Jackie Tatum Harvard Recreation Center, set along 62nd Street, is the backyard for much of Harvard Park, with a pool, a skate plaza and one of the city's inclusive Shane's Inspiration playgrounds. Homes are small and mostly from the 1920s. California bungalows and Spanish-style houses share the side streets with duplexes and triplexes, and many lots are narrow with a driveway running to a garage or back unit. Newer apartment buildings show up along Vermont and the larger avenues. The park does a lot of work. Beyond the pool, which runs swim classes and a water polo program for young swimmers, there are tennis and pickleball courts, basketball, ball fields and the skate plaza on 61st Street. Farther east, Mount Carmel Park and its recreation center on West 70th Street add another option. At 66th and Vermont, Village Market Place, run by the nonprofit Community Services Unlimited since 2007, sells local produce and pantry goods, and its SoulFul Cafe pours coffee and smoothies and makes sandwiches and rice bowls. Reinas Restaurant and Pupuseria on Normandie is a neighborhood pick for Salvadoran food. Errands mostly run through Chesterfield Square on Slauson, where Food 4 Less, Home Depot and a Starbucks share one big lot. The Rail to Rail path along Slauson gives walkers and cyclists a lit, landscaped route east toward the A Line or west toward Inglewood, and the Harbor Freeway is a few minutes away. The main streets are the tradeoff. Western, Vermont and Slauson are wide, loud and car-first, and much of the frontage is fast food and parking lots. Walk a block in from them, though, and Harvard Park turns into rows of stucco and small porches, with the sound of balls on the courts carrying from 62nd Street.
