Lakewood is one of Walnut Creek's quietly distinctive neighborhoods, partly for its winding, heavily shaded streets and partly for the small namesake lake that gives it character you don't find elsewhere in the city. A lot of the housing dates back to the 1930s and 1940s, with midcentury ranches and the occasional rebuilt farmhouse, and the mature canopy of magnolias, redwoods, and evergreens does much of the aesthetic work. Indian Valley Elementary sits right in the neighborhood next to Shell Ridge Open Space, which is a genuine draw, and the trail access into Shell Ridge from this side is excellent. It's a settled, leafy pocket where the landscaping has had decades to fill in. The honest limitation is convenience: this is a car-first neighborhood for errands, with little walkable retail of its own. You're buying the trees, the lots, the schools, and the proximity to open space, not a coffee shop on the corner. On those terms, Lakewood is one of the prettier places to land in the city.
