Las Flores and Big Rock Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Big Rock Mesa, Las Flores Canyon, Las Tunas Beach

Las Flores and Big Rock is the eastern end of Malibu, where the mountains drop almost straight into the ocean and PCH squeezes between bluffs and the surf. Big Rock Mesa climbs the hillside above the highway, with homes on steep lots angled for ocean views, and many owners there are rebuilding with fire-resistant materials, ember-resistant vents and cleared zones around the house. Las Flores Canyon is the only deep residential canyon in Malibu, a woodsy place of eclectic, mostly modest homes on smaller parcels along the creek. Outdoors life leans on the water. Big Rock Beach and Las Tunas Beach are narrow, rocky and best at low tide, with tide pools and quiet stretches for a walk. For longer walks and open space, most people drive west to Malibu Lagoon or up into the canyons. Two local stops anchor the food scene. The Country Kitchen is a walk-up window on PCH known for its breakfast burrito with bacon and hash browns. Groceries and coffee usually mean a drive west to the Civic Center. The tradeoff right now is construction. Lane closures, slower speed limits and work zones along PCH make short trips take longer, and neighbors live beside active job sites. Las Flores and Big Rock also sit on steep, fire-prone terrain, so defensible space and insurance planning are ongoing chores. Neighbors who stayed talk about the rebuild as something they are doing together, and each new frame on the mesa gets noticed from the highway below.
