Longwood is a small Los Angeles pocket between Washington and Adams boulevards, just west of Crenshaw, where a pair of commercial strips carries more culinary weight than its size suggests. The residential blocks are quiet and low, and the neighborhood is often lumped in with West Adams and Mid-City even though it has its own feel. Homes are mostly one-story single-family houses and duplexes from the 1910s through the 1930s, with Craftsman bungalows and Spanish-style stucco houses sharing the blocks. Lots are standard city size, and a handful of small apartment buildings sit near the boulevards. Restoration work shows up house by house rather than in wholesale redevelopment. On Adams Boulevard, Cento Pasta Bar serves inventive handmade pasta at a marble bar, Taqueria Los Anaya is known for thick housemade tortillas and a smooth mole, and Honey Bee's House of Breakfast handles Southern-style morning plates. Culture comes from the William Grant Still Arts Center on West View Street, a city arts center named for the composer that runs exhibits and classes. For outdoor time there are no big parks inside the boundaries, so people head south to Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area or to the recreation centers in nearby Baldwin Hills. Daily errands lean on the boulevards. The African Produce Market on Washington stocks West African staples, and full supermarkets sit in Mid-City or at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, both a quick drive away. The E Line station at Expo and Crenshaw is a short drive south, and the 10 Freeway is close for crosstown trips. The tradeoff is thin walkable retail beyond those few restaurants, so most errands still mean a car. What makes Longwood worth knowing is how compact it is, with pasta, mole and a serious Japanese kitchen all close to your front door.
