Meeks Bay & Rubicon Bay, Tahoma, CA

Meeks Bay and Rubicon Bay are the remote, water-first end of the west shore. Meeks Bay takes its name from John Meeks, whose family baled 25 tons of wild hay at the creek mouth in 1862, and its resort, marina, and campground occupy ground the Washoe knew as Mayala Wata, ancestral summering land the Tribe has recently regained the concession to steward, a genuinely current and well-documented story. Rubicon Bay to the south is a quiet, low-density, high-value waterfront pocket. The living here is lakefront-oriented and seasonal, old-Tahoe cabins alongside larger waterfront homes with piers and buoys, among the more secluded stretches on the shore. The lakeshore Rubicon Trail runs the cliffs just south past Rubicon Point toward Emerald Bay, from D.L. Bliss State Park, which sits nearby rather than inside. And yes, that is a different Rubicon from the famous Jeep trail inland. The honest catch is access. This is the shore's most exposed pocket to the Highway 89 winter closures at Emerald Bay, where avalanche and rockfall shut the road at least once most winters, lengthening the drive to South Lake services. Add heavy snow, wildfire, and seasonal-only on-site services. Remote is the feature and the cost.
