Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review

Tahoma is a portmanteau, Tahoe plus home, and despite the resemblance it is not named for Mount Rainier. This southwest-shore settlement grew as a resort community around 1916, and it has a genuine Olympic footnote: the 1960 Winter Games held their cross-country and biathlon events nearby at a temporary stadium on McKinney Creek. The lakefront here carries deep history, including Chambers Landing, whose pier bar traces to about 1875 and bills itself as Tahoe's oldest. The housing is quintessential old-Tahoe, cabins and mid-century homes on wooded upslope lots with a lakefront tier of piers and buoys, larger and leafier than the south-shore grids, and heavily second-home. The marquee neighbor is just south: Sugar Pine Point State Park and the 1903 Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, the west shore's grandest Gilded-Age estate, sit adjacent rather than inside, so treat them as a walk-or-drive draw. The constraints are the west shore's: Highway 89 is a two-lane that congests in summer and closes toward Emerald Bay in winter, snow runs heavy, wildfire is a standing risk, and full services are a drive. For quiet, tree-cover, and lake access away from the crowds, Tahoma delivers it.
