Meyers has been a gateway since before California was sure of its borders. Yank's Station opened here as a trading post in 1851 and became the easternmost remount station of the Pony Express in California. George D. H. Meyers took the property over in 1873 and left his name on the valley. Highway 50 still does what the stage road did, dropping travelers off Echo Summit into the basin straight through the middle of town. It runs colder than the lake neighborhoods, greener in spring, with a stronger local identity than almost anywhere on the south shore. This is the hometown of two-time Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Jamie Anderson, who grew up here the fifth of eight kids, a detail that explains the place better than any listing: Meyers raises mountain athletes. Housing spans original cabins to newer builds on roomy lots, under county rather than city rules, which shapes everything from rentals to remodels. The highway is the rub. Chain-control days stack traffic through town, and every Tahoe-bound storm arrives here first. Locals will tell you the stand against the Caldor Fire proved what years of fuel work were for, and they are not wrong.
