Mount Nebo takes in the south side of downtown La Mesa, from the storefronts along La Mesa Boulevard back through Palm Avenue and Spring Street toward the hill whose name it borrows. The original landowner named that summit after the biblical mountain, and the early Mount Nebo Lookout Park tract of 1908 laid out the hillside paths that people now call the Secret Stairs. Homes are a mix of eras, which is part of the appeal. Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Eclectic cottages and the odd Folk Victorian from the lemon-ranch years share the blocks with later houses from the decades after. Lots are small by suburban standards, and the narrow streets fill with parked cars in the evening. Half of the Village's restaurant row sits on the Mount Nebo side of the boulevard. Sheldon's Service Station serves breakfast and coffee in the city's first full-service gas station, built around 1920 by George Sheldon, who later served as mayor. Mario's De La Mesa has been a family-run Mexican restaurant since 1982, with sauces made daily from Sonora and Sinaloa recipes. City Tacos Village Taqueria and Curbside Eatery & Drinkery fill in the block, and Dark Horse Coffee Roasters on Palm Avenue is the cold-brew stop. Collier Park on Palm Avenue is the city's oldest park, reopened in 2024 after a $4.5 million renovation with a new playground, fitness equipment and a tile wall painted by residents. Its 1907 spring house once bottled water from the springs that drew the Kumeyaay here long before the town existed. For a workout, the Secret Stairs loop starts nearby at the La Mesa Depot and climbs nearly 500 steps past bougainvillea to views of Mount Helix. Sprouts on Palm Avenue handles groceries, and the Orange Line trolley stops at Spring Street and La Mesa Boulevard. Living here means sharing the neighborhood with big crowds a few times a year. Oktoberfest draws more than 100,000 people over three days, the Thursday classic car show fills the boulevard all summer, and street parking gets scarce on those nights. On a quiet weekday morning, with the patio at Sheldon's filling up and the shops still unlocking their doors, this side of the Village feels like a small town that happens to have a trolley.
