Mt. Washington rises between Highland Park and Glassell Park in Northeast Los Angeles, where living here mostly means living on the hill, with narrow roads switching back through the San Rafael Hills far above the traffic on Figueroa. Homes are single-family houses fitted onto the slope, a mix of eras and styles on irregular lots. Few blocks look alike. Eldred Street, with a grade of about 33 percent, ranks among the steepest streets in the city and shows how much the terrain shapes daily routines. Elyria Canyon Park, off Bridgeport Drive, has a 2.3-mile network of trails open only to hikers. Smaller hillside parks like Moon Canyon Park on Museum Drive and Heidelberg Park on Moon Avenue tuck into the canyons, and Sycamore Grove Park sits at the base of the hill along Figueroa. There's very little commercial space on the hill itself, so food and coffee come from below. Antigua Coffee House roasts its own beans a short drive down Figueroa, and Highland Park's York and Figueroa corridors, a few minutes away, cover most dinners, from Villa's Tacos to Mala Class and its Sichuan noodles. Groceries mean driving down to Superior Grocers on Avenue 45 or the markets in Highland Park. The A Line's Southwest Museum station, near the historic museum on Museum Drive, is the easiest route downtown or to Pasadena, and the Arroyo Seco Parkway is close by. The tradeoff is the roads themselves, which are narrow, steep and tight on parking, and almost every errand needs a car. Mt. Washington Elementary is among the few daily destinations up top, which makes the hill feel like a place you come home to rather than pass through.
