North Hollywood is where the Metro B Line ends, and the subway terminal sits at the center of this Los Angeles neighborhood, which took its current name from the old town of Lankershim in 1927. Homes range widely. Side streets hold 1920s to 1950s bungalows, Spanish-style cottages and small ranch houses, many on modest lots with detached garages. Apartment buildings line Magnolia, Burbank and Vanowen, and newer mid-rise buildings with ground-floor shops keep rising near the station and at NoHo West on Laurel Canyon. Parks are neighborhood-scale. Valley Plaza Recreation Center has fields and a pool, and the Whitnall off-leash dog park runs along a power line corridor. The Tujunga Wash greenway and the bike paths along Chandler Boulevard give runners a flat, car-free line east to Burbank. Eating out here rewards curiosity. Sri Siam Cafe on Vanowen is known for its crispy rice salad and cross-regional Thai cooking, and Swinging Door BBQ smokes Texas-style brisket in a gas station lot. Groundwork Coffee on Chandler is the coffee stop near the arts district. Daily life is easier without a car here than most of the Valley. The B Line reaches Hollywood and downtown, and the G Line busway across the street heads west to Chatsworth. Trader Joe's sits at NoHo West, Ralphs is on Magnolia, and a weekly farmers market sets up near the arts district. Density comes with the transit. Streets near the station fill with traffic and parking gets tight, and the 170 freeway and the Hollywood Burbank Airport flight path bring noise to some blocks. North Hollywood still feels like two places, with theater crowds on Lankershim at night and quiet bungalow streets a few blocks away.
