North Valley is the long, sprawling piece of Oceanside that follows the San Luis Rey River inland from the harbor, with Camp Pendleton along its northern edge. It covers boat slips and seafood dinners at one end and quiet tract streets, a golf course and a lake park at the other, so two residents can describe it in completely different ways. At the western end, Oceanside Harbor brings a lighthouse, hundreds of boats and a row of waterfront restaurants. Oceanside Broiler on North Harbor Drive is known for seafood and steaks, a large aquarium in the dining room, two patios and a long daily happy hour. Lighthouse Oyster Bar & Grill on South Harbor Drive shucks oysters with a fish market next door. Inland, Marieta's on Vandegrift Boulevard makes its Mexican food and sauces from scratch, and its chili verde has a following. Homes inland are mostly single-story and two-story houses with three to six bedrooms, mixed with townhome complexes such as Brisbane, where shared pools and a playground are part of the deal. Arrowood is one of the familiar community names. The San Luis Rey River Trail ties the whole thing together, a flat, smooth path of about nine miles that passes under the cross streets on its way to the harbor. Arrowood Golf Course on Village Drive has 18 holes with real elevation changes and a casual grill, Fairways Kitchen & Bar. Luiseño Park on Teal Way displays artifacts, replica petroglyphs and pictographs, and an old stone oven, and Libby Lake Park on Calle Montecito serves the eastern streets. For errands, the San Luis Rey Crossing center on North River Road covers coffee and quick meals, and full supermarkets sit along Mission Avenue and College Boulevard just south. State Route 76 runs the length of the valley to Interstate 5, and the Coaster, Amtrak and Metrolink leave from the Oceanside Transit Center near the coast. The size cuts both ways. A trip from the eastern streets to the harbor is a real drive, and Route 76 slows down at commute hours. The best way to understand North Valley is to ride the river trail west toward the harbor and watch the tract roofs give way to masts.
