Northwest Turlock is the largest of the city's neighborhoods and the one that holds California State University, Stanislaus. It stretches across the northwest side of Turlock in Stanislaus County, from the older blocks near Canal Drive out to the shopping centers along Countryside Drive. The campus gives the area its character. The university grounds cover 228 acres, with a library, an art gallery and home games for the Warriors teams, so the area has a school-year rhythm. Housing in Northwest Turlock around it is a mix of single-family subdivisions, manufactured homes and apartment communities, so the streets change from one block to the next. Roth SocialHouse on Hotel Drive is the dinner destination, a modern American restaurant that sources locally, and The Market at Roth next door is the place for espresso and a quick breakfast to carry out. Corvelos Portuguese Bakery on Countryside Drive is the stop for Portuguese-style baking, and Alison's Cafe House on West Canal Drive serves breakfast and desserts with free wifi. Donnelly Park is the green anchor, forty acres with picnic tables, a wooden play structure, restrooms and a pond full of ducks. Pedretti Park on North Tegner Road is the ballfield complex, with softball and baseball diamonds and grass volleyball courts, and the Brandon Koch Memorial Skate Park sits on the Pedras Road grounds beside Donnelly. Monte Vista Crossings, at 2801 Countryside Drive, is the shopping hub, with Walmart, Petco and a long list of chain restaurants, while Save Mart and FoodMaxx handle grocery runs. Highway 99 is a few minutes away. Distances are the tradeoff. Northwest Turlock is spread wide, and a campus, a ballfield complex and a shopping center are all far enough apart that most trips mean driving. The ducks at Donnelly Park are the detail visitors mention most, and they have a way of turning a quick walk into a longer one.
