Pelandale, in northern Modesto, is a neighborhood where you can run most errands without leaving it. The Dale Road shopping district holds Trader Joe's, O'Brien's Market, Target and a Regal movie theater, with Save Mart for staples, and the chains, an In-N-Out among them, make it the busiest eating area in the north end. Homes sit on subdivision streets that curl around small parks, McKinney Colony, Perkins and Aqueduct among them. Newer construction keeps lawns and sidewalks uniform from one cul-de-sac to the next, which gives the houses an orderly feel. Sylvan lies next door, with Sherwood Forest and Standiford a short way south. The shopping district draws people from those neighbors too, so weekend afternoons bring steady traffic near the theater and the big stores. Wesson Ranch Park is the main outdoor draw, and the paved Standiford Trail ends beside it. A walk or ride can start here and follow the trail for a few miles, with a loop around Chrysler 99 Park partway along. Mike's Grillhouse serves family recipes made with local ingredients, and Tahoe Joe's is the steakhouse on Pelandale Avenue for a sit-down meal. Giacomo's Espresso runs the drive-thru for macchiatos and pastries, Sourdough & Co. On Dale Road is the lunch sandwich counter, and Panera Bread and Cold Stone Creamery cover bakery and dessert. Groceries and a movie can share one trip, and Highway 99 is close for Stockton or Sacramento. Because so much is close, residents rarely need to cross town for ordinary needs. Evenings are calm once the stores close. On foot, you can get around inside the subdivisions, but the shopping district is laid out around parking lots. Wide arterials and big parking fields dominate the center, and there is no old main street or square. Pelandale makes up for it with convenience that works without fuss.
