Shadow Hills is horse country inside Los Angeles, one of the last neighborhoods in the city zoned mostly for keeping horses, and residents have fought for decades to keep it that way. It sits in the northwest Verdugo Mountains between Sunland and Sun Valley, with Hansen Dam just to the northwest and La Tuna Canyon to the southeast. Homes sit on large, irregular lots with barns, corrals and riding rings behind many of them. Today the mix runs from older ranch houses and cottages to newer custom homes, and many streets have dirt shoulders built for riders instead of sidewalks. Trails are the neighborhood's real public space. Riders reach the Hansen Dam trail network and the Big Tujunga Wash on horseback, and La Tuna Canyon and the Verdugo fire roads draw hikers and mountain bikers. The historic Stonehurst Recreation Center on Dronfield Avenue adds a small park and community room. Dining is limited to a few spots along Sunland Boulevard. Villa Terraza is a small Italian restaurant, and Rise N Shine Cafe handles diner breakfasts. For a wider choice, Foothill Boulevard in Sunland is a few minutes east, where The Back Door Bakery & Cafe bakes from scratch and pours a long coffee menu. For groceries, residents drive to Sunland or Sun Valley. The 210 runs along the north side with exits at Sunland Boulevard, and the 5 is close for trips toward the Valley or downtown. There is almost no transit, so plan to drive. The rural feel comes with tradeoffs. Some streets are unpaved, services are spread out, and wildfire risk is high in the canyons. Freeway sound from the 210 carries into the hills. Few other places in the city let a rider saddle up at home in Shadow Hills and reach the Hansen Dam trails without loading a trailer.
