Neighborhood Review

South shore skiing was born on this street. In 1947 Lee and Daisy Miller ran a rope tow off a Model T wheel at Bijou Park, on what is now Ski Run Boulevard. Casino man Chris Kuraisa bought the little operation for $1,950, and in December 1955 opened Heavenly Valley at the top of the road with a single double chairlift on Gunbarrel. The boulevard has been the city's lake-to-lift axis ever since, marina at the bottom, Heavenly's California Lodge at the top. The boulevard carries the restaurants and the apres traffic, while the side streets hold everything from vintage cabins to view rebuilds as the grade climbs. It is the most tourism-forward residential pocket on the California side, so expect churn: winter parking crunch, summer marina crowds, rental turnover on some blocks. The compensation is real. Almost nowhere else in Tahoe can you walk to both a chairlift and a boat slip, and the street that invented South Shore skiing still delivers exactly that.
