Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review

Tahoe Island fills the flats between the Tahoe Keys and the Y, a working grid of cabins and ranches on ground that was all part of the Upper Truckee's marsh country before the postwar building boom. The neighborhood shares a boundary with the wetlands the Keys were carved from, and the California Tahoe Conservancy's ongoing marsh restoration next door is slowly bringing the river's old delta back to life at the street ends. It is one of the more attainable city neighborhoods with a real location: the Keys' lagoons on one side, the Y's errands on the other, meadow light in between. Busy edges along Highway 50 and Tahoe Keys Boulevard carry the traffic, and the housing stock is honest rather than polished. For anyone priced out of the Keys who still wants that corner of town, this is the sensible answer next door.
