Tahoe Paradise was one man's empire of optimism. Sacramento developer Jim A. E. Wilson formed the Tahoe Paradise Corporation in 1953 and platted some 4,500 parcels across 1,600 acres at the base of Echo Summit, complete with a golf course, stables, and a man-made lake. Lake Baron, the little lake at the heart of Tahoe Paradise Park, stands as Wilson's tribute to his daughter Connie, who died in an automobile accident in 1966. The result today is the broad county-side spread between Meyers and the city line, where Pioneer Trail and Highway 50 thread through big pines and the lots stretch out. The park on Lake Baron is still the community's gathering spot, and the Lake Tahoe Golf Course lies along the Upper Truckee meadows nearby. Homes run from vintage chalets to substantial newer builds, most with real trees between them and the neighbors. Nothing here is walkable in the city sense, and every errand is a drive. In exchange you get the version of Tahoe people picture when they say they want space: forest lots, county rules, and quiet that holds even in August. Wilson promised paradise in the name, and sixty years of trees have mostly delivered it.
