The Birds is one of the classic themed tracts that give Hercules its quirky charm: every street is named for a bird, from Sparrow and Falcon to Meadowlark and Bluebird. Built out in the 1970s and 80s in the central part of the city, it is established, leafy in spots, and unmistakably itself. This is settled, mid-city Hercules. Ohlone Elementary sits in this area, the central parks and the civic core are a short trip away, and you are close to San Pablo Avenue and the I-80 ramps without being on top of them. The homes are the dependable single-family stock of that building era, on quiet residential blocks that have had decades to mature. The honest framing is that this is comfortable rather than flashy, and like the rest of inland Hercules, it is a drive to most everyday errands. But the bird-street theme, the central location, and the established feel make The Birds one of the neighborhoods newcomers learn to recognize first.
