Earvin Magic Johnson Park, with two lakes, a wetland and a half-mile loop trail, occupies University Park's southeast corner. Housing is mostly small single-family homes on narrow lots, with bungalows and modest Spanish-style houses from the early and middle 1900s, driveways and fenced front yards. Duplexes and back units are common, and Imperial Highway and the 105 Freeway cut through the middle of the grid. Food in University Park is old-school and mostly takeout. Jim Dandy Fried Chicken on South Vermont is a counter-service favorite known for golden fried chicken and corn fritters. Big Mama's Bayou Shack on Figueroa leans Cajun. Magic Johnson Park is the outdoor anchor. A county renovation finished in 2021 added the lakeside loop, a splash pad, a community event center and restored marsh, and the 126-acre park still has room for picnics and fishing along the water. The Watts Towers are a short drive east in Watts, where guided tours run Thursday through Saturday. Errands for University Park homes run along Vermont, where a Ralphs and a Starbucks share a lot near 119th Street, and along Main, Figueroa and Avalon, which are lined with small markets. The freeway is the everyday cost. The 105 and Imperial Highway carry heavy traffic through the middle of the neighborhood, and the blocks beside them are loud. Farther from the freeway the streets quiet down, and on weekends the walk around the lakes at Magic Johnson Park is where much of the area spends its time.
