The neon sign from Art's Famous Chili Dogs still hangs at Florence and Normandie, and The Breakfast Shack now cooks under it, serving hot link sandwiches on brioche, shrimp and grits and salmon croquettes. The Walter H. Leimert Company laid out the tract in 1928 as Vermont Avenue Knoll, and much of the original housing is still here. Expect bungalows and Spanish Revival homes, many with arched doorways and exposed beams, on compact lots. Duplexes, small apartment buildings and backyard units are common, and more multifamily buildings line Vermont Avenue itself. Vermont Avenue is the neighborhood's main street, and its best-known landmark is a former college campus. Pepperdine was based here from 1937 until 1972, and the Crenshaw Christian Center later took over the grounds and built the round FaithDome, which opened in 1989. Totorame Market Cafe on Vermont is a local stop for tacos. Groceries are handy. El Super sits on Vermont near 72nd Street, and Smart & Final is a few blocks south on the same avenue, so a weekly shop rarely means leaving the neighborhood. Metro buses run the length of Vermont, and the Harbor Freeway on the east edge puts downtown and the J Line busway close by. Parks are the thin spot. Vermont Knolls has only small pocket parks of its own, so a pool day or a real run usually means heading south to Algin Sutton Recreation Center in Vermont Vista or west to St. Andrews in Manchester Square. The freeway side also carries a steady hum. Weekday mornings are when the neighborhood feels most itself, with a line at The Breakfast Shack patio, buses rolling up Vermont, and the FaithDome catching the light a few blocks away.
