Wilmington is where the Port of Los Angeles meets a real neighborhood, with Mexican fan palms lining Avalon Boulevard and cranes and refinery stacks never far from view. History here is close at hand. The Banning Museum, the family's Greek Revival mansion, sits inside the 20-acre Banning Park on M Street, and the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum on Banning Boulevard is housed in the last wooden building left from the Union Army post. The palms on Avalon were planted for the 1932 Olympics. Outdoor time centers on the water and the big parks. The Wilmington Waterfront Promenade opened in 2024 near Banning's Landing with a public pier, swing benches and a play area, next to the larger Waterfront Park with its fields and walkways. Wilmington Recreation Center on Neptune Avenue adds fields and courts closer to the older blocks. Homes in Wilmington are mostly older single-family houses, small bungalows and modest postwar stucco homes on narrow lots, mixed with duplexes and apartment buildings near Avalon and Anaheim Street. Many blocks sit a short distance from industrial land, a pattern that defines this part of the harbor. Maya Mexican Restaurant on Avalon has been feeding the neighborhood for four decades, and Tom's No. 1 World Famous Chili Burgers on Anaheim Street is the stop for a burger buried in chili. Ambrosia Coffee Roasters on Fries Avenue roasts its own beans sourced straight from farmers, and Hojas Premium Tea House on Avalon pours loose-leaf blends. Groceries come from Northgate González on Pacific Coast Highway, Food 4 Less and El Super on Anaheim Street, and small meat markets along Avalon. The tradeoff is the industry. The upside of living this close to the harbor shows on a weekend evening, when the promenade by Banning's Landing fills with people watching ships slide past the pier.
