Winnetka began in 1922 as the Weeks Poultry Colony, a settlement of one-acre egg farms laid out by Charles Weeks, who named it after his earlier farm in Illinois. Postwar single-family homes dominate, mostly one-story ranches and stucco bungalows built as the poultry plots were subdivided. Apartments and condos line Sherman Way, Vanowen Street and Winnetka Avenue, and the northern end near Nordhoff Street shifts into light industrial blocks with warehouses and supply shops. Parks are neighborhood scale. The Winnetka Recreation Center on Winnetka Avenue has a gym, a ball diamond and a play area, Quimby Park on De Soto Avenue adds basketball and tennis courts, and Runnymede Park is a pocket park with picnic tables. For trails, head west and north to the hills of West Hills and Chatsworth. The food is the pleasant surprise. Les Sisters' Southern Kitchen, now based on Nordhoff Street, turns out fried chicken, jambalaya, gumbo and catfish. Jesse's Grind on Saticoy Street is the neighborhood coffee shop, and Pierre's Pastry & Cakes on Sherman Way bakes custom cakes. Errands are easy with JONS on Roscoe Boulevard, Vallarta on Vanowen and a Food 4 Less on Saticoy. The Metro G Line runs a short way west along Canoga Avenue, and the 101 and 118 are each a drive of a few miles. There is little here to walk to from most houses, and the big boulevards carry heavy traffic. Still, a 1940s hot dog stand and a neighborhood bowling alley sit about a block apart on Vanowen, which makes for an easy Friday night close to home.
