Kingsbury climbs the grade that opened the region. David Kingsbury and John McDonald built the wagon toll road over Daggett Pass in 1860, cutting fifteen miles off the run from Sacramento to the Comstock mines, and the Pony Express and the telegraph followed it up. Douglas County bought the road for a thousand dollars in 1889. Stateline exists because of a line on a map. Nevada legalized gambling in 1931 and California did not, so the casinos clustered on the Nevada side of Highway 50 to catch the California traffic, and they still do. Harvey Gross opened a one-room casino here in 1944 that grew into today's corridor.
