Central is the part of Hercules that actually feels like a town center. It runs along the San Pablo Avenue spine in the middle of the city, and it is the most walkable corner Hercules has, with everyday errands, bus stops, and older established blocks closer together than anywhere else in town. This is where Hercules does its day-to-day business. You are near the San Pablo Avenue corridor for shopping and food, close to the civic core, and well placed for WestCAT service and the I-80 ramps. The housing skews older and more mixed than the master-planned tracts out east, which is part of why it carries a different, lived-in feel. The tradeoff is the arterial. San Pablo Avenue is a working road, not a quaint main street, so the busier blocks come with traffic and noise rather than storefront charm. Hercules has been planning for years to give this corridor a real downtown identity. For now, Central is the practical, get-things-done middle of the city.
