Chevy Chase is Glendale's canyon neighborhood, a long wooded cut through the hills on the city's eastern edge where Chevy Chase Drive winds up toward the ridge shared with La Cañada Flintridge and Pasadena. Oaks and sycamores close in over the road, and deer and red-tailed hawks are regular company. Houses here span most of the last century. Spanish homes from the 1920s, big brick Tudors, 1960s midcentury moderns and 1970s contemporaries sit on sloping, wooded lots with canyon views. Architecture fans know the drive for two Lloyd Wright houses from 1926, the Mayan-influenced Derby House and the Spanish Colonial Calori House, both on the Glendale Register. Golf shapes the canyon. Bell among the trees, plus a pool that doubles as a summer gathering spot for members. Glenoaks Park, Scholl Canyon Park and Emerald Isle Park on Lenore Drive add playgrounds and picnic lawns. The Wild Oak Cafe on East Chevy Chase Drive is the neighborhood's breakfast and lunch spot, roasting its own meats, pouring Peet's coffee and turning out avocado toast and breakfast bowls. The club's Sycamore Restaurant is just down the road, and the Chevy Chase Library branch sits a little farther up the drive. Everything else in Chevy Chase is a drive. Groceries mean a trip of two miles or more to Vons, Target or Whole Foods, no transit line serves the canyon, and the 2 Freeway is the route into Los Angeles. Turn off Glenoaks Boulevard onto Chevy Chase Drive and within a few curves the city grid gives way to oaks, fairways and hillside.
