Mare Island is unlike anywhere else in Vallejo, or really anywhere in the Bay Area. It sits across the strait from the rest of the city on the grounds of the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard, the first naval base on the West Coast, which closed in the 1990s and has been slowly redeveloping ever since. The residential side centers on the historic officers' housing, a remarkable row of preserved naval-era homes, alongside newer construction added during the reuse of the island. Living here means living inside a piece of history with a lot of open space, shoreline, and quiet. It also means accepting the tradeoffs of an island still finding its footing. The redevelopment is uneven, large stretches remain industrial or vacant, and being near good merchants is about as hard as it gets in the city, so daily needs mean crossing back over into Vallejo proper. Mare Island is for people drawn to the history and the space who are willing to drive for almost everything else.
