Olivewood stretches across the southern part of National City from 24th Street down to the Sweetwater River and State Route 54. Highland Avenue and Sweetwater Road are its two commercial spines, and Interstate 805 marks the eastern edge. Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center sits on N Avenue around the 1896 Noyes House, a Queen Anne Victorian set on roughly eight acres of gardens. The nonprofit runs gardening and nutrition classes, monthly open houses and farm dinners, and those events are the easiest way to walk the grounds. Homes here are mostly older single-family houses, the bulk of them from before 1980, with apartment buildings strung along Highland and the busier cross streets. Only a small share of National City's homes are newer than 2000, and new construction here is rare. Recreation sits inside the neighborhood too. Las Palmas Park and the Camacho Recreation Center fill about 30 acres with diamonds, courts, a gymnasium, picnic tables and the year-round city pool. Close by, the nine-hole National City Golf Course on Sweetwater Road has low-cost memberships and a driving range. The Sweetwater Bikeway along the river leads west to Pier 32 Marina and the bay. Highland Avenue and Sweetwater Road split the eating. Home Coffee, in a Sweetwater Road center at 1914, pours a vanilla rose flat white and ceremonial-grade matcha. Carnitas Quiroga, at 2241 Highland, does carnitas and chilaquiles, and a run of taco shops and small counters lines the avenue around it. Groceries and errands mostly mean the Highland and Sweetwater Road centers, and a car helps since the neighborhood spreads wide. SR-54 runs along the southern edge toward Chula Vista and I-5, and the trolley is a quick drive west at the 24th Street station. Freeways frame two sides, so traffic noise follows anyone living near I-805 or Route 54. Between the gardens on N Avenue, the pool, the golf course and the river path, though, Olivewood has more room to get outside than its busy avenues suggest.
