Olympian Hills wears its theme on its street signs: this small west-central Hercules neighborhood names its streets for figures from Greek mythology, which is a fitting touch for a town literally named after a Greek hero. It sits on the slopes above the bayfront, compact and quietly residential. The setting is the appeal. You get a bit of elevation, calm streets with little through-traffic, and an easy reach down to the Waterfront and the bay on one side and over to the civic core and San Pablo Avenue on the other. It is one of the tidy hill pockets that make up the western, older-planned half of the city. True to form for Hercules, you will drive for groceries and dinner; there is no retail built into the neighborhood. But the mythological street grid, the hillside quiet, and the quick bay access give Olympian Hills a little more identity than its size suggests.
