Sylvan, Modesto, CA

Sylvan sits at the northeast end of Modesto, and Beyer Park is its focal point. The blocks around it hold well-kept houses on quiet streets. The parks here sit close together. Beyer Park, Dragoo Park and Stockard Coffee Park all lie inside the neighborhood, with Walnut Park and Hyde Park rounding out the small ones, and Wesson Ranch Park, at the end of the paved Standiford Trail, is just outside. For a longer outing, the Dry Creek Trail is a paved route of nearly five miles through oak groves beside the creek, with a disc golf course at East La Loma Park, a short drive south. Those trails give runners and cyclists a way to cover miles without driving far. Black Orchid Brewing runs a mug club and community events and has become the regular beer stop for the area. Perko's Cafe is the diner for eggs and pancakes, and Caffettino, a roaster over in Sherwood Forest, is the nearest serious espresso counter. Babylon Market covers groceries without leaving the neighborhood, and the larger Save Mart and Trader Joe's are a quick drive away. Shops cluster along the main roads, so errands are a car trip. Several sushi, ramen, pho and taqueria counters sit along those same roads, which means takeout is rarely a problem. Evenings at the brewery and weekends at the park are when the neighborhood is busiest, with the streets around them staying calm. Because the quiet streets sit back from those corridors, nearly every need beyond the parks involves driving. Walking to dinner is not realistic, though the parks are easy to reach on foot from the residential blocks. Pelandale sits next door, and Village One and North Beyer Park complete the cluster. Within it, the park and the brewery are what give Sylvan its center of gravity.
