The Stones, known to locals as the Gemstones, is one of the larger themed tracts in central Hercules, with streets named for gems like Turquoise, Opal, and the rest of the jewelry box. Ohlone Elementary sits on Turquoise Drive, which tells you how committed the neighborhood is to the theme. It is a 1970s and 80s build, established and spread across a good slice of the mid-city. For a central neighborhood, it offers room. The tract covers a fair amount of ground, the central parks and the civic core are a short drive, and San Pablo Avenue and the I-80 ramps are close for errands and commuting. The housing is dependable single-family stock from its era, on quiet residential streets. Like the other inland themed tracts, this is comfortable and car-oriented rather than walkable, and the size means the feel can shift block to block. But the gemstone street names and a neighborhood elementary give The Stones a clear identity within Hercules.
