Truckee is the rare Tahoe-area neighborhood with a genuine downtown, and it earned it the hard way. The town grew from Gray's and Coburn's stations into the Central Pacific's mountain division point, took the name of a Paiute guide the emigrants heard as Tro-kay, and rebuilt in stone and brick after fire after fire. Commercial Row and Brickelltown are on the National Register, the 1900 railroad depot still catches the daily Amtrak, and the 1875 stone jail ran until 1964 and is now a museum. Living here means real walkability by mountain standards: shops, restaurants, the river regional park, and trailheads, with the Truckee River running through and a strong full-time community by Tahoe measures. Housing runs from 19th-century downtown cottages to newer builds on both sides of the freeway. The downsides are the price of a working town: the active rail line sounds its horns through downtown, Interstate 80 cuts across the neighborhood, summer and ski-season parking gets tight, and historic-district rules shape what you can do to an old house. It is loud in the way a real place is loud.
