Wilshire / Montana, often called Wilmont, feels like the grown-up, walkable side of Santa Monica. It sits between two active commercial corridors, with Montana Avenue bringing the boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops and Wilshire Boulevard handling more of the practical errands. Downtown and the beach are close, but neither dominates the neighborhood. Most blocks feel residential, settled and pleasantly removed from the tourist traffic a few minutes south. This is apartment and condominium territory. Attached homes accounted for 97 percent of neighborhood sales from 2022 through 2024, the highest share in Santa Monica, with a median size of 1,419 square feet. Many buildings went up during the apartment boom of the 1960s and 1970s, so the streets are lined with everything from simple midcentury complexes to courtyard buildings with more architectural personality. Private yards are uncommon, but balconies, shared courtyards and easy access to the surrounding neighborhood help make up for the smaller personal footprint. Montana Avenue gives Wilmont much of its identity. More than 150 shops and restaurants line the stretch between Seventh and 17th streets, including neighborhood institutions like Father's Office and the Aero Theatre. The Aero began as a round-the-clock movie house for Douglas Aircraft workers and now operates under American Cinematheque. Pavilions, Vons and the Montana Avenue Branch Library make the neighborhood equally good at ordinary Tuesday errands. The older architecture appears in memorable pockets rather than across entire blocks. The 1929 Charmont Apartments wrap around a Moorish-tiled courtyard and remain one of Santa Monica's most distinctive apartment buildings. Reed Park offers tennis courts and the landmarked Miles Memorial Playhouse, while Palisades Park runs along the neighborhood's western edge with bluff-top paths and wide ocean views. The appeal of Wilshire / Montana is how easily everything fits together. Residents can walk to groceries, coffee, restaurants, parks, movies and the bluff without living in the middle of Downtown. Wilshire and Montana both carry steady traffic, and the neighborhood does not offer the large lots or quietest streets found farther north. What it does offer is a comfortable, well-connected lifestyle with enough going on to stay interesting and enough distance from the crowds to still feel like home.
