Neighborhood Review

Every town has a birthplace, and Incline's is here. The Sierra Nevada Wood and Lumber Company built its mill town, Incline City, along Mill Creek in 1878, and in 1880 completed the machine the whole village is named for: the Great Incline, a 4,000-foot cable tramway that hauled up to 300 cords of timber a day up the mountainside to a flume bound for the Comstock mines. When you say Incline Village, you are quoting this neighborhood's resume. The modern subdivision became the first residential area of the 1960s village, and it still behaves that way: low elevation, lived-in, stubbornly year-round in a town of second homes, with a number of large, level lots from the early building waves. The southeast-corner location is the quiet advantage. The residents-only beaches and the Ski Beach boat ramp are close by, and the namesake creek still threads down through the forest to the lake. The catch is Highway 28. Summer weekends send the Sand Harbor procession along the neighborhood's edge, and the state park's parking overflow is a running local saga. Get one street deep and it fades back to forest.
