Plaza is an east Long Beach grid of 1950s single-story homes wrapped around the busy corner of Spring Street and Palo Verde Avenue. The area started out as one piece of the Lakewood Plaza tract, and in 1953 its owners voted to annex to Long Beach, the first of the Lakewood-area tracts to do so. The houses are mostly modest ranches and bungalows from that postwar run, many now opened up, added onto or given new facades, so a single block can mix near-original homes with full remodels. Streets are flat and easy to walk, with deep front lawns and driveways instead of alleys. Spring Street is the neighborhood's front porch. handles the weekly shop at the east end of the strip. For coffee, Memento Coffee Works on Woodruff Avenue draws a crowd for its quiet, minimal room and a signature ube latte. Green space is close in every direction. Heartwell Park and its public golf course sit at the neighborhood's northern edge, Birdcage Park is a small pocket for a quick loop, and El Dorado Park West lies just across Studebaker Road with its duck pond, disc golf course and branch library. Daily life runs by car for most errands, with Ralphs on Los Coyotes Diagonal and the Spring Street centers covering nearly everything. Both the 405 and the 605 are close by, which also means Spring and Studebaker carry real traffic at rush hour, and the corners nearest the shopping strips feel busier than the interior blocks. Living in Plaza tends to mean a morning routine that barely leaves Spring Street: a bagel at Grounds, a walk at El Dorado, and home again before the lot at Stater Bros. fills up.
