El Miradero, Glendale, CA

El Miradero in Glendale is named for the 1904 mansion that now serves as the Brand Library, a white building of domes and pointed arches that looks more like something from a desert palace than a public library. The neighborhood sits on the slope below it, where the city meets the Verdugo Mountains. Homes here are mostly older single-family houses on quiet, gently climbing streets, many of them historic, and the foothills fill the view at the top of the blocks. It reads as a calmer, greener edge of Glendale compared with the apartment blocks closer to Glenoaks. Brand Park is the big draw. Trails leave from the upper end of the park and climb into Verdugo Mountains wilderness, where deer, coyotes and bobcats live, and the library's art and music collection gets heavy use.
