Flower Piano’s 12 Pianos and the Homes a Short Walk Away

On the afternoon of Thursday, September 10, 2026, a dozen pianos sit among the flower beds of the San Francisco Botanical Garden, each one open to whoever walks up to the bench. At 5 p.m. the band La Gente SF plays the opening-night concert in the Celebration Garden, and Flower Piano 2026, the festival’s 11th year, runs through September 20.

Admission is free for San Francisco residents with ID, according to the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, and for neighbors of the 9th Avenue gate that free entry holds all year. The neighborhood at the gate, the Inner Sunset, also matches Cole Valley and Haight Ashbury on our amenities score, with a median of $2.23M against their medians above $4M.

Flower Piano 2026 hours, tickets and the 15-minute rule

Anyone can play. The pianos are first come, first served, and players are asked to keep it to 15 minutes when others are waiting, according to the Gardens of Golden Gate Park.

About 130 performers and ensembles are scheduled over the 11 days, according to Sunset Piano, the nonprofit that presents the festival with Gardens of Golden Gate Park. Flower Piano began in 2015 for the garden’s 75th anniversary and has returned every year since except 2020, Hoodline reported on September 9.

Open play runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, which is also the last entry for general admission. The garden itself stays open until 7 p.m.

The ticketed Zoox Lounge in the Celebration Garden takes its last entry at 7 p.m., and Funcheap’s listing puts the opening-night lounge ticket at $75.

For proof of residency, a California license or ID with a San Francisco address works best, and a utility bill or lease with a photo ID is also accepted, even on your phone, per the garden’s ticket page.

Getting to the 9th Avenue gate

The main gate is at 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way, where the park’s south edge meets the Inner Sunset. The 7 Haight and 44 O’Shaughnessy stop at Lincoln and 9th, a one-minute walk, according to the garden’s directions page.

The N-Judah stop is five minutes away on foot. Eastbound trains stop on Irving Street at 8th Avenue and westbound trains stop on 9th Avenue at Irving, a pair of stops that opened in 1928. The Music Concourse Garage is a two-minute walk from the garden.

The resident perks that outlast the festival

San Francisco residents get into the Botanical Garden free on any day it is open, not only during Flower Piano. The garden also lets everyone in free from 7:30 to 9 a.m. daily, across 55 acres and more than 8,000 kinds of plants, and all day on the second Tuesday of every month, according to the Gardens of Golden Gate Park.

Across the Music Concourse, the de Young offers free general admission on Saturdays to residents of the nine Bay Area counties through the end of 2026, with special exhibitions still ticketed, according to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Living near Golden Gate Park at the Botanical Garden end

Houseberry’s amenities score measures that everyday reach, and San Francisco as a whole rates 3.3 out of 5. The neighborhoods around the park’s east-central end score between 3.1 and 3.6, with medians from $2.07M to $4.6M.

The Inner Sunset, the neighborhood around Irving Street and 9th Avenue that begins at the garden gate, scores 3.6 and had a median sale price of $2.23M in August 2026. That is within $30,000 of the San Francisco citywide median of $2.2M for the same month.

Cole Valley/Parnassus Heights, the pocket around Cole and Carl streets below UCSF’s Parnassus campus, also scores 3.6, with a median of $4.04M in July 2026. Haight Ashbury, which meets the park’s east end at Stanyan Street, scores 3.6 as well, with a median of $4.6M in June 2026. The Inner Richmond, north of the park across Fulton Street from the de Young, scores 3.4.

Monthly medians in small neighborhoods can move on a few sales. The Inner Sunset median ran from $1.74M in January 2026 to $2.5M in April 2026.

A 3.6 is also short of the top, since only 10 of the 92 San Francisco neighborhoods we score reach 4 or higher on amenities.

Golden Gate Heights, the hilltop neighborhood above the Inner Sunset around Grandview Park, sits close to the garden but scores 3.1 on amenities, under the citywide 3.3, with a July 2026 median of $2.07M.
