At 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, the shops on Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen start handing candy to toddlers. That is the first of San Jose's two Halloweens this year. The second is Saturday night, Oct. 31, when the city's old grids and newer tracts fill with kids after a 6:10 p.m. sunset.
This guide covers both.
The kids' events from Oct. 24 to Oct. 31 come first, with dates and times confirmed by the organizers. Then the neighborhoods, sorted by part of town, with Houseberry's safety and amenities scores beside each one.
The data has a twist. Of San Jose's 112 scored neighborhoods, six score 4 or better out of 5 on amenities in Houseberry's San Jose rankings, the walkable, decorated kind of place people drive to on Halloween. Only two of those six, Willow Glen and Almaden Valley, also reach 4 on safety.
Eight days, nine events. All of them were confirmed on the organizer's own page this week except the Winchester trail, which we found only on an event listing for 2026.
| Day | Event | Time | Where | Cost |

The History Park haunt is the one we would circle for a preschooler. History San José bills it as festive but not scary, with hayrides, a mini pumpkin patch and trick-or-treating at the park's historic houses. The event listing says tickets are sold at the gate.
Santana Row's morning is free and open to the public, with stilt-walkers, pumpkin decorating and merchant stops. It runs on a Tuesday, so it suits kids too young for school.
Willow Glen's event belongs to the Willow Glen Business Association, which asks families to move clockwise around the route. At the Garden Theater, 1165 Lincoln Ave., each child can pick one free book.
The city's own Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services calendar lists the two Halloween-day events. Prusch Farm adds hay wagon rides and farm animals. Happy Hollow's Green Halloween has a costume parade and trick-or-treat stations, and two rules worth knowing before you dress. Adults cannot wear full-face masks. Capes stay off the rides.
Willow Glen is the default answer. "It's alive and well in Willow Glen," one r/SanJose commenter wrote two years ago, claiming about a thousand kids a year at the door. The standard advice on the same forum is the bungalow blocks east of Lincoln.
Willow Glen scores 4.0 on safety and 4.2 on amenities in Houseberry's data, 30th of 112 overall. The calmer option is a few minutes south. Lincoln Glen scores 4.7 on safety and Booksin 4.5, with the same older houses and fewer cars from out of town.
The Rose Garden has the highest amenities score in San Jose, 4.5 out of 5, by our count. It is named for the 5.5-acre Municipal Rose Garden off Naglee Avenue, and it is the neighborhood local Halloween videos on Facebook and Instagram keep naming this month. Hanchett Avenue, the street behind our featured image, has older homes set close to the sidewalk under fall color. A commenter on r/SanJose called the Rose Garden one of the best areas, with restaurants nearby for after.
The Rose Garden scores 3.9 on safety, a hair above the city median. The trade-off is the crowd. Go before 7 if your kids are small.

Naglee Park is the historic grid between downtown and Coyote Creek, a short walk from San Jose State. Visit San Jose's own Halloween roundup names it for spooky decorations and creative themes.
Naglee Park scores 4.4 on amenities and 2.5 on safety in Houseberry's data. That safety score reflects year-round incidents near downtown, not one night of trick-or-treating. If you go, go early and stick to the blocks where porch lights are on.
San Jose Taiko started Halloween in Japantown in 2003 as a safer way to trick-or-treat, with a safety talk for kids first, according to the group. Street closures began in 2017 after the sidewalks on Jackson Street got too crowded. This year adds Skate Day with the Japanese American Museum of San Jose. The map and schedule were still listed as coming soon on Oct. 23.
Japantown scores 4.0 on amenities and 3.4 on safety. One r/SanJose commenter pointed to Northside, the residential blocks next door, as a good bet for trick-or-treating.
Downtown is for indoor plans. The Children's Discovery Museum runs a daily mask-making workshop through Nov. 6, and The Tech Interactive holds a slime workshop for kids on Halloween, per the downtown association. Six city garages give 90 minutes of free parking.
Cambrian ranks 3rd of 112 overall in Houseberry's data and scores 4.6 on safety. A local brokerage's 2025 roundup sent families to the streets around Houge Park and the Union Avenue side streets. These are flat mid-century tracts, easy going with a stroller.
Almaden Valley is the other neighborhood that clears 4 on both safety (4.3) and amenities (4.0). The same 2025 roundup named Crystal Springs Drive in the Almaden Country Club area, where some residents decorate golf carts. On r/SanJose, Little Falls Drive came up as a popular street before the pandemic. We could not confirm how busy it is now.
"Evergreen is fantastic," a commenter wrote in an r/SanJose thread this month on the best neighborhoods for decorations. Evergreen ranks 4th of 112 overall in Houseberry's data, with 4.3 on safety and 4.7 on schools. The streets are newer than Willow Glen's and curve more, so park once and walk a loop. Prusch Farm's 3 p.m. event on King Road is a 15-minute drive west.
Which day is Willow Glen trick-or-treat? Friday, Oct. 30. The business association lists only the two Friday sessions.
What time should we start on Saturday? Sunset is about 6:10 p.m., so small kids do best from 4:30 to 6:30. Older kids can stay out past 7.
Is trick-or-treating dead in San Jose? Not in the neighborhoods above. In a long r/SanJose thread from 2024, one resident had seen two kids by 8 p.m., and the top answer was blunt: everyone heads to the wealthier neighborhoods.
What if it rains? About one Halloween in eight sees measurable rain. The Children's Discovery Museum and The Tech Interactive are the indoor backups.
Take a toddler to Lincoln Avenue at 11 a.m. on Friday and to History Park the Saturday before. On Halloween night, take a school-age kid to the Rose Garden at 5:30, or skip the crowd and walk Lincoln Glen, which scores 0.7 points higher on safety than Willow Glen itself. The Bay Area trick-or-treat guide covers the rest of the region. Before you pick a block, check how it scores on Houseberry's San Jose safety rankings.
