We ranked 417 Sacramento-area neighborhoods by their average July high. The coolest line the river in Elk Grove and the Pocket, and the hottest are in Lincoln and Rocklin.

On a typical July afternoon, the Pocket neighborhood in south Sacramento tops out around 90.9°F. Turkey Creek in Lincoln, more than 30 miles northeast, tops out around 95.4°F. Same month, same valley, about four and a half degrees apart, according to Houseberry's climate data for the Pocket and Turkey Creek.
The difference has a name. The Delta breeze, the marine air that pushes in from San Francisco Bay through the Carquinez Strait and up the Sacramento River, reaches the south and west sides of the region first. By the time it gets to Placer County, it has less to give.
We ranked 417 neighborhoods across Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties by their average July high. If you are house hunting and dread 100-degree weeks, the map of where it is coolest is not the map most people expect.
Every Houseberry neighborhood page has a weather block built from PRISM's 30-year climate normals (1991 to 2020), sampled across that neighborhood's boundary on an 800-meter grid. The July high is the average daily maximum for the month over those 30 years. These are model-based normals for each neighborhood, not readings from a thermometer on your street, and not a forecast for next summer.
We used the 417 live neighborhood pages in the four counties where the climate model has high confidence, and left out the Lake Tahoe basin, which runs about 80°F in July and would sit apart from everything else. City figures are medians of their neighborhoods, for cities with at least six.
| City | Neighborhoods | Median July high | Median July low |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elk Grove | 27 | 90.9°F | 58.6°F |
| West Sacramento | 19 | 92.5°F | 58.8°F |
| Sacramento | 142 | 92.8°F | 59.1°F |
| Rancho Cordova | 18 | 93.2°F | 60.1°F |
| Carmichael | 9 | 93.3°F | 60.1°F |
| Fair Oaks | 9 | 93.3°F | 60.4°F |
| Folsom | 15 | 93.6°F | 60.5°F |
| Woodland | 8 | 93.6°F | 58.8°F |
| Citrus Heights | 7 | 93.7°F | 60.4°F |
| Roseville | 37 | 94.0°F | 60.5°F |
| Granite Bay | 15 | 94.0°F | 60.7°F |
| El Dorado Hills | 19 | 94.2°F | 60.2°F |
| Rocklin | 15 | 94.7°F | 60.9°F |
| Loomis | 8 | 94.9°F | 60.8°F |
| Lincoln | 8 | 95.2°F | 61.0°F |
Read the table top to bottom and you are reading a map. The list runs from the river and the Delta in the southwest to the Placer County foothills in the northeast, almost in order of distance from the Carquinez Strait.

The Coast Ranges wall the Central Valley off from the Pacific. The one low gap is the Carquinez Strait, where the Delta drains into San Francisco Bay. On a summer evening, cool, dense marine air pours through that gap and flows up the Delta and the Sacramento River. The National Weather Service in Sacramento describes it reaching the Sacramento area first before spreading north, and a strong push can drop the next day's high by 25°F or more, in a forecaster's technical note.
KCRA meteorologist Mark Finan called it "nature's air conditioner" in a CapRadio piece on a summer without it. When it works, a 105-degree afternoon can fall into the 60s by 9 p.m.
So the neighborhoods closest to the river and the Delta get the breeze earliest and longest. That is why the coolest valley-floor neighborhoods in our data line the river south of downtown.
Hood Franklin Road, on Elk Grove's southwest edge toward the Stone Lakes refuge, averages 89.6°F in July. Laguna West, the planned community off Interstate 5, averages 90.0°F and gets about 81 percent of its possible sunshine. The 14 coolest valley-floor neighborhoods we measured are all in Elk Grove. The Pocket is next.
Elk Grove's east side, out by Bradshaw and Grant Line roads, runs about 92.5°F, closer to the city of Sacramento. The city's median is still the lowest in the region. You can compare all 27 Elk Grove neighborhoods on Houseberry's Elk Grove ranking.
The city of Sacramento's 142 neighborhoods span less than three degrees. The Pocket, wrapped in a bend of the Sacramento River, is coolest at 90.9°F. Meadowview is 91.1°F and Greenhaven 91.4°F. At the other end, Kirkland Place and Foothill Farms on the northeast side run about 93.5°F.
Two and a half degrees sounds small. Spread over a summer of 90-degree afternoons, it adds up on the electric bill, and the Pocket's 58.4°F average July low is one of the coolest in the region.
Lincoln is the hottest city in our data. All eight of its neighborhoods average 94.9°F or more in July, led by Turkey Creek at 95.4°F, Downtown Lincoln and Sun City Lincoln Hills at 95.3°F. Rocklin's Whitney Ranch averages 95.2°F and Stanford Ranch 95.1°F.
Its nights run warmer too, about 61°F, roughly two and a half degrees above Elk Grove's. Lincoln, Rocklin and Roseville are also where much of the region's newest construction is, so a lot of buyers land in the hottest part of the map without realizing it. We think anyone moving to Lincoln or Rocklin from the coast should price in a summer electric bill that looks nothing like what they had before, and should treat a west-facing backyard as a negative.
Climb into El Dorado County and the pattern changes. Camino, up U.S. 50 in apple country, averages 89.1°F in July, one of the coolest days in the region. But its average July low is 63.0°F, and Georgetown's is 63.8°F, the warmest nights we measured.
Foothill towns sit in what meteorologists call the thermal belt. Cold air drains downhill at night and pools on the valley floor, so the slopes stay warmer after dark. If you sleep with the windows open, a valley neighborhood near the river may suit you better than a foothill one with a lower daytime high.
Is Elk Grove cooler than Roseville? Yes. Elk Grove's median July high is 90.9°F and Roseville's is 94.0°F, about three degrees warmer, in Houseberry's data.
Does Davis get the Delta breeze? Partly. Davis neighborhoods average about 92.1°F to 92.7°F in July, close to the city of Sacramento.
How many 100-degree days does each neighborhood get? Our data uses monthly averages, not daily counts. A higher July average means more of the 100-degree afternoons, but we do not publish a day count.
